There are two Moroccos. The one north of the High Atlas — Marrakech, the medina, the argan forest, the Atlantic coast. And the one south — drier, older, more cinematic, more silent. Burnt ochre plains stretching to the Sahara. Ancient fortified villages built from the earth they stand on. A sky that belongs to a different latitude.
The Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate Day Trip from Marrakech takes you across the mountain wall that separates these two worlds — up and over the legendary Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest paved mountain road in Morocco at 2,260 metres, before descending into the Draa Valley pre- Saharan plains and the extraordinary landscapes of the south.
Your first destination is Ait Benhaddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visually spectacular places in Africa. This ancient fortified ksar is a labyrinth of earthen towers, crumbling ramparts, and agadir granaries rising directly from the desert, separated from the modern road by the Mellah river. Virtually every major film set in Morocco has used Ait Benhaddou as its backdrop — from David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia in 1962 to Game of Thrones in 2013. Walking its alleyways is both a historical and a cinematic experience.
From Ait Benhaddou, the road continues to Ouarzazate — the Moroccan city the film industry built. Atlas Studios, one of the largest film studios in the world, sits on the edge of the desert here. The city’s Kasbah Taourirt is one of the finest surviving kasbahs in the south. And the light — that extraordinary, flat, golden pre-Saharan light that every cinematographer who has worked here speaks about — is everywhere.
This is the day trip that makes you understand why Morocco has two completely different souls.

The guide covers the Berber architecture of the earthen towers, the trading history of the ksar as a caravan stop on the ancient Sahara salt and gold route, and the remarkable roll call of films and television series that have used Ait Benhaddou as their backdrop — from Lawrence of Arabia to Gladiator to Game of Thrones.

What to Expect
Departure from Marrakech — 8:00 AM
Your private driver collects you from your hotel, riad, or apartment in Marrakech at 8:00 AM. The early departure is essential on this route — the Tizi n’Tichka pass is best crossed in the cool morning hours, Ait Benhaddou is at its most dramatic in mid-morning light before the coach tours arrive, and the full 8 to 10 hour day requires an early start to do it justice.
Your vehicle heads south immediately out of Marrakech, crossing the Haouz plain before reaching the first Atlas foothills and beginning the long climb towards the pass. Your driver will provide context on the route, the mountains, and the history of the road as you ascend.
Tizi n’Tichka Mountain Pass — approx. 9:30–10:30 AM
The Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres is one of the great mountain road experiences in Africa. The ascent from Marrakech takes the road through a sequence of increasingly dramatic High Atlas landscapes — hairpin bends, sheer drop valley views, Berber roadside villages, and the long switchback climbs that bring you above the treeline and into the bare, windswept world of the high pass.
At the summit, your driver will stop for photographs — the view north back towards Marrakech and south towards the pre-Saharan plains is extraordinary. The pass itself, marked by souvenir stalls and a café, is the official boundary between the Atlantic-facing north of Morocco and the Sahara-facing south. Crossing it is a genuinely felt transition.
The descent towards Ouarzazate is equally spectacular — the landscape drains of green, the rock changes colour from grey to ochre, and the air becomes drier and warmer as the Atlas gives way to the desert plains below.
Ait Benhaddou — approx. 11:00 AM–1:00 PM
Ait Benhaddou is one of the most visually arresting places in Morocco — possibly in Africa. The ancient fortified ksar rises directly from the desert on the far bank of the Ounila River, its earthen towers and crumbling ramparts glowing in the pre-Saharan light exactly as they have for centuries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living film set that has stood in for Jerusalem, ancient Egypt, and the fictional city of Yunkai in Game of Thrones.
Access to the ksar is via the river — shallow enough to cross on stepping stones in most seasons, or by wooden boat when the water is high. Once inside, the village is a labyrinth of narrow passages, earthen towers, Berber architectural details, and resident artisan families who still live and work within the walls.
If you have added the optional local guide, they meet you at the entrance and lead the full visit — up through the ksar to the agadir granary at the summit, from which the view across the river valley and desert plains is one of the finest viewpoints in southern Morocco.
Without a guide, the ksar is self-guided — genuinely possible and still spectacular. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours inside the walls. Entry fees are paid on-site.
Lunch near Ait Benhaddou or Ouarzazate
Lunch is not included in the base price and is taken at your own pace at one of several good local restaurants near Ait Benhaddou or in Ouarzazate itself. Your driver will recommend the best option based on your group’s preferences — riverside terrace restaurants facing the ksar at Ait Benhaddou, or town centre restaurants in Ouarzazate serving traditional southern Moroccan cuisine.
Budget approximately 150 MAD per person for a full Moroccan lunch (tagine, salad, bread, mint tea). Your driver will advise on timing to ensure lunch fits naturally between Ait Benhaddou and your Ouarzazate visit without rushing either.
Ouarzazate — approx. 1:30–3:00 PM
Ouarzazate is Morocco’s film city — the place where the film industry discovered that the pre-Saharan desert light, the ancient kasbahs, and the proximity to both mountain and desert landscapes made it the most versatile outdoor film location on earth. Atlas Studios, one of the largest film production facilities in the world, has hosted productions including Lawrence of Arabia, The Living Daylights, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, The Mummy, Prince of Persia, and multiple seasons of Game of Thrones.
Your visit to Ouarzazate centres on Kasbah Taourirt — a magnificent fortified palace and ksar complex on the eastern edge of the city, formerly the seat of the powerful Glaoui family who controlled the southern mountain passes for decades. The kasbah is one of the finest and best-preserved in Morocco, with an extraordinary earthen tower complex rising above a labyrinthine old town of lanes and workshops.
Entry to Kasbah Taourirt and Atlas Studios is paid on-site. Your driver will guide the timing of your Ouarzazate visit to make the most of the afternoon before the return journey begins.
Scenic Return via Tizi n’Tichka — approx. 3:00 PM
The return journey recrosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass from south to north — a completely different visual experience from the morning descent. The afternoon Atlas light hits the rock faces from a different angle, and the views north back towards Marrakech and the Haouz plain open up as you crest the summit.
Your driver will stop at additional viewpoints on the return if time and light allow — the northern descent of the Tichka offers some of the most dramatic roadside panoramas on the entire route.
Return to Marrakech — approx. 6:00–7:00 PM
Your driver returns you to your hotel, riad, or apartment in Marrakech at approximately 6:00 to 7:00 PM depending on the day’s pace and stops. Total duration is 8 to 10 hours from departure. Your evening is free — the Jemaa el-Fna is at its most spectacular after dark, and after a day in the desert it feels like a completely different city.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Ait Benhaddou from Marrakech?
Ait Benhaddou is approximately 190 km south of Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Ouarzazate is a further 30 km beyond Ait Benhaddou, making the full round trip approximately 380 to 420 km — a long but extraordinarily scenic journey that constitutes one of the great road trips available from any Moroccan city.
Is the local guide included or extra?
The local guide at Ait Benhaddou is an optional add-on at +29€ for the group — not included in the base price. The guide meets your group at the ksar entrance and leads a full guided visit including the history of the site, its architectural significance as a UNESCO-listed earthen ksar, and the extensive film history of Ait Benhaddou. Highly recommended for first-time visitors and history or film enthusiasts.
What is the Luxury Car upgrade?
The Luxury Car upgrade (+29€ for the group) provides a premium vehicle — Mercedes Vito or equivalent — for the full day. Given the 8 to 10 hour duration and the spectacular but long mountain road crossing of the Tizi n’Tichka pass, many groups find the upgrade worthwhile for the additional comfort, legroom, and quality of the driving experience on one of Morocco’s most dramatic routes.
Do we cross the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass?
Yes — the Tizi n’Tichka pass is the main route between Marrakech and Ait Benhaddou and is one of the highlights of the day in its own right. At 2,260 metres it is the highest paved mountain road in Morocco. The ascent and descent involve hairpin mountain roads with dramatic High Atlas views. Your driver is fully experienced on this route. In winter (January to February) the pass is occasionally closed briefly after heavy snowfall — we monitor conditions and advise in advance if this affects your booking.
Is lunch included?
Lunch is not included in the base price. Several good local restaurants near Ait Benhaddou offer riverside terrace dining with views of the ksar, and Ouarzazate has a good selection of town centre restaurants serving traditional southern Moroccan cuisine. Budget approximately 150 MAD per person for a full meal. Your driver will recommend the best option based on your preferences and timing.
What films were made at Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate?
The list is remarkable. Ait Benhaddou has appeared in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Jesus of Nazareth (1977), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Gladiator (2000), Alexander (2004), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Prince of Persia (2010), and Game of Thrones (seasons 3 and beyond, as the city of Yunkai). Ouarzazate’s Atlas Studios has hosted The Mummy, Babel, Jewel of the Nile, and dozens of international productions. Your local guide can bring the complete film history of both sites to life.
What are the entry fees at the sites?
Entry fees are paid on-site and are not included in the tour price. Approximate fees: Ait Benhaddou ksar entry is FREE. Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate is approximately 20 MAD per
person. Atlas Studios entry varies by visit type — approximately 80 MAD per person depending on which areas are open. All fees are in Moroccan Dirhams, payable at the site entrance. Your driver will advise on current fees on the day.
Is this trip suitable for children?
Yes. The Tizi n’Tichka crossing and the Ait Benhaddou ksar are both fascinating for children — the mountain road is dramatic and exciting, and the ancient fortified village with its towers and labyrinthine alleyways is genuinely compelling for younger travellers. The ksar involves some uneven earthen paths — comfortable shoes are recommended for children. The total 8 to 10 hour duration is long for very young children, so this trip is best suited to families with children aged 7 and above.
What time does the trip start and finish?
Departure from your Marrakech accommodation is at 8:00 AM. The total duration is 8 to 10 hours, so return to your Marrakech accommodation is typically between 6:00 and 7:00 PM. The exact return time depends on the day’s pace, how long your group spends at each site, and traffic on the Tichka pass. The 8:00 AM departure is important — later starts compress the time available at both Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate.

We had a great time on our private trip to Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate from Marrakech with Badr. He was on time, picked good spots for snacks and bathroom breaks. He shared interesting information without overdoing it. The drive through the Atlas mountains was scenic, he stopped and pulled over for pictures at the perfect spots. It’s a long day but has some amazing views. The car was pristine and air con throughout. Our family loved it, would recommend.
